Program
Let the current and wind guide you as you enjoy the stunning scenery that can only be experienced from a boat. Departing from Oban on Saturday, June 22, the sturdy three-masted barquentine Thalassa will take us to Troon in seven days. Accompanied by the onboard whisky expert, we will visit distilleries along the way.
Just as France classifies its wines by region, Scotland has a regional classification for its whiskies. On this cruise, we will visit four of the six regions: Highlands, Islands, Islay, and Campbeltown. This is the perfect opportunity to learn about the differences between different whiskies and their regional or international characteristics.
On the way, we encounter distilleries dating back to the 17th century and others that are only a few years old. What they all have in common is that they produce whisky using pure craftsmanship and regional characteristics.
Depending on weather and navigation conditions, we may visit the following distilleries along the way: Oban (before setting sail), Ardnamurchan, Tobermory, Jura, Ardbeg, Lagavulin, Laphroaig, Bowmore, Caol Ila, Bunnahabhain, Ardnahoe, Kilchoman, Bruichladdich, Bushmills, Glen Scotia, Springbank, and Glengyle. For Laphroaig enthusiasts with a plot register, this is the perfect opportunity to plant the flag and pick up the dram.
In addition to Scottish distilleries, we also take a trip to Bushmills in Northern Ireland. Although this is English territory, we refer to it as Irish Whiskey.
In the afternoon workshops, we can discuss why whisky tastes the way it does, why one whisky is different from another even though the distance from one distillery to another is only a few kilometers, and much more. There will be plenty of opportunities to exchange ideas about whisky flavors.
Of course, instead of a distillery, you can choose to experience the extraordinary landscape of the Scottish islands. There are hikes available near each port. This area is perfect for a short trip or a several-mile hike. Guests should not miss the stunning scenery of the Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland. There are also beautiful hikes in the local nature reserves around Tobermory and on Islay.
Nautical life can be experienced in various port cities such as Port Ellen, Tobermory, and Campbeltown. Oban, Campbeltown, and Tobermory also have a good selection of museums, galleries, shops, and local attractions.
Wind and weather conditions apply to all parts of this program.
