Voyage Description
Join us on an unforgettable 5-day voyage through the central Azores, starting and ending on the island of Terceira with calls at the beautiful islands of São Jorge and Pico. Sail aboard our historic tall ship and discover the spectacular landscapes, rich maritime heritage, and unique character of this extraordinary archipelago.

Your adventure begins in Angra do Heroísmo, a UNESCO World Heritage city on Terceira. After settling on board, we set sail for São Jorge—an island renowned for its dramatic cliffs, lush green slopes, and famous fajãs nestled between mountains and sea. Stroll through the charming town of Velas, sample the island’s celebrated cheese, and, time permitting, explore one of its picturesque hiking trails.

From São Jorge, we continue to Pico, dominated by Portugal’s highest mountain. Famous for its volcanic landscapes, UNESCO-listed vineyards, and deep-rooted whaling traditions, Pico offers plenty to discover—whether you choose to walk through the vineyards of Criação Velha, visit the Whalers’ Museum, or simply soak in the island’s unmistakable atmosphere.

Our final leg brings us back across the channel toward Terceira. As we sail to Angra do Heroísmo, there will be time to savor the simple pleasures of life at sea: join the crew in hoisting the sails, take the helm, or relax on deck keeping watch for whales and dolphins, which are frequently spotted in these waters. Returning to one of the Atlantic’s most beautiful natural harbors is the perfect conclusion to an authentic Azorean sailing adventure.

Weather
In late August, weather in the Azores is warm and ideal for sailing, with daytime temperatures ranging between 22°C and 27°C. Steady northeasterly winds provide pleasant conditions at sea. Evenings are cooler, so bringing a light jacket for stargazing on deck is recommended.

Vessel

Santa María Manuela

The Santa Maria Manuela was launched on 10 May 1937 in Lisbon. It is a 67-metre sailing ship. The ship was named after the owner’s wife, Maria Manuela, mother of 16 children. The main function of the Santa Maria Manuela was cod fishing. The Santa Maria Manuela underwent a number of structural changes over the years, from the removal of the masts to the installation of a navigation bridge. In 1993 the ship was considered obsolete, was dismantled and only the steel hull remained. The following year the Santa María Manuela Foundation was created, a project that united 17 institutions under the same purpose: to recover the ship. The SMM now has unique conditions for sea voyages, events, parties and training at sea. Predominant colour WHITE.
