Voyage Description Join us on an unforgettable journey aboard the Santa Maria Manuela, a four-masted schooner originally built for cod fishing nearly a century ago and fully renovated in 2022. We will sail from the port of Portimão, following the iconic waters of the Algarve to the historic city of Cadiz. Our voyage begins as we cast off in Portimão, setting course eastward along golden sandy beaches and impressive rock formations of the southern Portuguese coast. From there, we enter the Gulf of Cadiz, offering ample opportunities to participate in sailing or simply unwind under the Atlantic sun.
As we sail toward Cadiz, volunteer to help the crew hoist and trim the sails; the feeling of taking the helm of a 68-meter tall ship and feeling her respond to the sea is unforgettable. Knot-tying classes offer a great way to learn a new skill while sharing stories with your fellow crew members. Along the way, you will experience authentic ocean sailing and the camaraderie that comes with it. Weather permitting, you can climb the rigging for panoramic views of the horizon or relax on the bowsprit as the ship cuts through the waves. Enjoying a sunset drink on deck is the perfect way to top off each day at sea.
Crossing the waters of the Gulf of Cadiz, keep your eyes open for the region’s abundant marine life, where dolphins and seabirds frequently accompany the ship’s wake. Finally, the golden silhouette of Cadiz Cathedral and its ancient sea walls will emerge on the horizon to welcome us to one of Europe’s oldest cities. We will anchor to celebrate our final night on board, concluding a journey filled with history, sea, and adventure.
Weather July offers excellent sailing conditions from Portimão to Cadiz, featuring warm, dry, and sunny weather throughout the voyage. Daytime temperatures range around 28–33°C, refreshed by Atlantic sea breezes. As we sail east along the Algarve and into the Gulf of Cadiz, moderate westerly winds and coastal thermal breezes predominate, ideal for smooth, enjoyable sailing. Seas are generally slight to moderate, skies remain completely clear, and rainfall is virtually non-existent, offering a very comfortable and pleasant life at sea under the warm southern European sun.

Santa María Manuela
The Santa Maria Manuela was launched on 10 May 1937 in Lisbon. It is a 67-metre sailing ship. The ship was named after the owner’s wife, Maria Manuela, mother of 16 children. The main function of the Santa Maria Manuela was cod fishing. The Santa Maria Manuela underwent a number of structural changes over the years, from the removal of the masts to the installation of a navigation bridge. In 1993 the ship was considered obsolete, was dismantled and only the steel hull remained. The following year the Santa María Manuela Foundation was created, a project that united 17 institutions under the same purpose: to recover the ship. The SMM now has unique conditions for sea voyages, events, parties and training at sea. Predominant colour WHITE.
