Voyage Description Join us on an unforgettable journey aboard the Santa Maria Manuela, a four-masted schooner originally built for cod fishing nearly a century ago and fully renovated in 2022. We will sail from Lisbon to the sunny Algarve coast. Our voyage begins as we pass beneath Lisbon’s 25 de Abril Bridge—an awe-inspiring sight, especially at sunset. From there, we set course south with the prevailing wind astern, navigating along the rugged coastline of the Costa Vicentina, offering ample opportunities to take part in sailing or simply unwind.

As we sail south with the wind behind us, volunteer to help the crew hoist and trim the sails; the feeling of taking the helm of a 68-meter tall ship and feeling her respond to the wheel is unforgettable. Knot-tying classes offer a great way to learn a new skill while sharing stories with your fellow crew members. Along the way, you will experience authentic ocean sailing and the camaraderie that comes with it. Weather permitting, you can climb the rigging or relax on the bowsprit. Enjoying a sunset drink on deck is the perfect way to top off each day at sea.

Rounding Cape St. Vincent, do not be surprised to see the ocean teeming with life. This confluence of the cold Atlantic Ocean and the warm, mineral-rich Mediterranean waters often attracts a wide variety of marine life, with shoals of small fish feeding seabirds and oceanic predators such as tuna and dolphins. We sail east along the Algarve coast before anchoring off Portimão to celebrate our final night together.

Weather July offers excellent sailing conditions from Lisbon to Portimão, featuring warm, dry weather and guaranteed sunshine. Daytime temperatures range around 28–32°C, refreshed by the steady northerly winds known as the “Nortada” that blow along the Portuguese coast, providing ideal sailing breezes. Seas are generally moderate, skies remain clear, and rainfall is rare, allowing for smooth, enjoyable downwind or beam-reach sailing cooled by fresh Atlantic air throughout the crossing.
