TRAVEL PROGRAM

The sailing ship Thalassa offers various themed tours along the Scottish coasts, including sailing/hiking tours.

During this sailing/hiking trip, we explore Scotland by both boat and foot. Our experienced Scotland/hiking guide, Gerard Spaans, is on board to provide charming hiking routes and, if desired, guidance.

This trip is an excellent opportunity, a unique sailing journey departing from the beautiful port of Oban with its rich history. We will be taken along the rugged coasts of various Scottish islands and peninsulas, depending on the wind and tide, including Mull, Ardnamurchan, Skye, and Rum.

The history of the Hebrides dates back millions of years. Since then, time has marked the landscape. Its history can be seen in lava formations, local vegetation, and buildings, among other things.

When the wind allows, we sail a bit more. This allows guests to fully enjoy the surroundings. We are often accompanied by dolphins, harbor porpoises, various seabirds, and sometimes even whales following the boat! Those who want to get involved can assist the crew with the sails.

Once ashore, there are options for a pleasant walk or a visit to some of the various Scottish local attractions. It’s also possible to tour by taxi: local taxi drivers are happy to show visitors all the ins and outs of the area. This sometimes creates memorable moments. In summary, this trip offers a good balance of everything this Scottish region can offer, with plenty of room for our guests’ personal interpretation.

Our on-board guide will be happy to assist you on the way, with extensive knowledge of Scotland’s history and expert advice on where our guests can go for local walks or visit castles and other historical sites.

Overnight on board, experiences can be shared, and plans are made for the next day, all while enjoying a delicious drink from our well-stocked bar (of whiskey).

At the end of the week, we disembark in Oban. With the experiences gained on board Thalassa, it may be possible to stay a bit longer here. Oban is perfect for a few extra days of vacation, strolling along the promenade, enjoying a tasting at the local Oban distillery, or visiting one of the museums.

Thalassa

Barquentine Thalassa is an imposing and seaworthy tall ship. This three master is one of the most beautiful and fastest sea sailers of the Dutch fleet. Rigged according to old traditions, Thalassa is fitted with all modern safety conveniences, she perfectly combines adventurous sailing with comfortable enjoyment.

Thalassa was built in 1980 in the traditional way and designed as a barquentine. Therefore, the foremast has a transverse rigging; the main mast and the mizzen mast have a longitudinal rigging.

The warm atmosphere, her tastefully decorated saloon and the comfortable cabins (each with their own shower and washbasin) make that guests on board of Thalassa immediately feel at home.The capable crew and the excellent cuisine make a trip with Thalassa an unforgettable event. Sailing on the sailing boats of the Nao Victoria Foundation is a magnificent human, technical and natural experience. You will take part in the sailing watches and experience the camaraderie of people of different ages, cultures and backgrounds, all as fond of the sea and boats as you are. You will learn navigation techniques, manoeuvring, knots and rigging, as well as getting to recognise the main stars and constellations. And all this in a natural environment as different, indomitable and incredibly beautiful as the sea.
