Embark on this 5-day hands-on sailing voyage and immerse yourself in the rich maritime history of the Mediterranean.  From the sophisticated charm of Nice to the archaeological wonders of Sardinia’s Port Torres and the cultural gems of Corsica’s Ajaccio, you’ll create unforgettable memories alongside fellow shipmates aboard the Santa Maria Manuela.

Our voyage starts in the picturesque city of Nice on the French Riviera, rich in maritime history dating back to Roman times, then known as “Nikaia,” a prominent naval base.  Before boarding consider a stroll along the Promenade des Anglais or explore Vieux Nice, the charming narrow streets and vibrant markets.

As we set sail south to towards Sardinia volunteer to help the crew hoist and set the sails. The feeling of helming a 68m sailing ship with the sensation as she responds to the command of the wheel is something to savor forever.   There´s nothing our crew like more then to share their knowledge of sailing with our guests, and they will encourage you to get actively involved in sailing the ship.

Knot classes are a great way to learn a new skill whilst sharing sailing stories with shipmates, and if the weather allows there’s the opportunity to go up the mast or relax on the bowsprit.  A drink at sunset on the deck is the perfect way to round off each day.

Before long we sail into Sardinia’s historic port of Port Torres, founded in Roman times by Julius Caesar.  Immerse yourself in the local culture, savoring traditional Sardinian cuisine at waterfront restaurants while experiencing the warm hospitality of the people.  Take the opportunity to step back in time with a visit to the local Roman ruins, thermal baths and the Antonine Palace, or lose yourself in the bustling markets filled with fresh seafood and local Sardinian crafts.

We set sail again past the Asinara National Park the second largest island of Sardinia with an odd historical and environmental status. Known as “Isola del Diavolo” (“Devil’s Island”) it has been used as a quarantine location, a prison camp during the First World War, and a high security prison during the terrorist period of the 1970s until the establishment of a National Park in 1998, now treasured for its ecological importance.  Now considered the most beautiful beach in Sardinia it is characterized by a long coastline dusted in white quartz pebbles which line the shallow seabed.

Our voyage culminates in Ajaccio, the birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte. Ajaccio’s rich maritime history is evident through its old port and historic sites.  Our last night together is spent sharing stories of the voyage with fellow shipmates during our celebratory deck BBQ party.

Having disembarked consider visiting Ajaccio’s Old Town, Napoleon’s ancestral home.

Weather 

April in Sardinia offers pleasant weather with temperatures ranging from 13°C to 18°C (55°F to 64°F).
