Journey

Terceira (PT) – Graciosa (PT) – Faial (PT) – Sao Jorge Chanel (PT) – Terceira (PT)

27 August (10h00)– 3 Sept (10h00)

For the ultimate voyage for mind, body and spirit, this sailing, yoga and cultural tour of the Azores central islands has no equal.

Our yoga voyages to the Azores in 2019 and 2022 proved so popular that we plan to follow a similar itinerary as we hop through this impressive mid-Atlantic volcanic archipelago. Distances are short offering a number of experiences from sailing to visits to quiet anchorages.

During the journey the captain will decide on the best itinerary based on the weather and sea conditions in order to ensure all guests are comfortable and can get the most of these days.

We are pleased to welcome Wide Ocean Retreat yoga group who will be practicing during this voyage. Their retreats are attended by people from all over Europe and have become renowned as the go-to yoga retreat experts in Portugal and the Azores.
We start and finish in Terceira. The waters around Pico Island and São Jorge Channel offer the chance to spot for whales. Sperm whales are the resident species, along with blue, fin and sei whales. Bottlenose, Atlantic spotted and common dolphins also usual species here at this time of the year.

If the weather allows, we plan to visit Graciosa, the serene island furthest north in the archipelago where the people have every right to be proud of their beautiful island, boasting the Furna do Enxofre, a 40m-high volcanic cave with a sulphureous lake.

A stop on Faial offers the chance to visit Horta and it’s the famous Peter’s Café Sport bar frequented by yachtsmen since 1918. Stroll in the marina and marvel at the centuries old sailors art.

We finish our island hopping on Terceira docking in UNESCO-listed Angra do Heroísmo, the Azores’ oldest city, with its 16th-century fortress and Renaissance town. The Serra de Santa Bárbara Algar do Carvão with its 90m-deep volcanic chimney, and the island’s small vineyards and lava-rock bathing pools in Biscoitos are popular tourist sites.
The yoga package is an extra on this voyage. If you would like to join the practice or find out more, please contact antonio@wideoceanretreat.com

Vessel

Santa María Manuela

The Santa Maria Manuela was launched on 10 May 1937 in Lisbon. It is a 67-metre sailing ship. The ship was named after the owner’s wife, Maria Manuela, mother of 16 children. The main function of the Santa Maria Manuela was cod fishing. The Santa Maria Manuela underwent a number of structural changes over the years, from the removal of the masts to the installation of a navigation bridge. In 1993 the ship was considered obsolete, was dismantled and only the steel hull remained. The following year the Santa María Manuela Foundation was created, a project that united 17 institutions under the same purpose: to recover the ship. The SMM now has unique conditions for sea voyages, events, parties and training at sea. Predominant colour WHITE.
