Our best-selling voyage is back! Set sail on a thrilling 8-day ocean crossing aboard the Santa Maria Manuela, covering 785 nautical miles from mainland Portugal to the Azores, one of the most stunning archipelagos in the world as voted by National Geographic Traveler.

Begin your adventure by sailing underneath Lisbon’s 25 de Abril bridge. As you pass Cascais and embrace life at sea, the crew invites you to join in on all aspects of sailing this historic 68m schooner. From hoisting the sails to taking the helm, there’s no better way to experience true tall ship sailing. With ideal wind conditions from the north, the ship moves effortlessly across the Atlantic, making for smooth, pleasant days on the water.

Onboard, you can take part in knot-tying lessons, climb the mast for panoramic views, or relax in the bowsprit netting. In the evenings, unwind with a sunset drink on deck, and enjoy the camaraderie of your shipmates as you share stories of the day.

Sunrise and sunsets are a sight to behold but as you near the Azores, keep an eye out for the magnificent marine life that frequents these waters. Whales, including sperm, blue, and fin, as well as playful dolphins, are often spotted in this region, making it an unforgettable end to your journey.

The voyage concludes in the beautiful city of Ponta Delgada, where you can explore the rich culture and history of this mid-Atlantic gem, extending your stay to visit the island’s natural wonders like Lagoa das Sete Cidades, a breathtaking crater lake that’s not to be missed.

WEATHER

In July, you can expect warm, sunny days with temperatures ranging between 20-25°C. The north winds are generally steady, perfect for smooth sailing across the Atlantic. Nights are cooler, so a light jacket will come in handy for evening stargazing on deck.

ABOUT LISBON

Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, is a city rich in history and flavor. Its winding, narrow streets of the older parts of town will pull you in, and if you’re lucky you may hear the sound of fado drifting from small taverns. The tiles—those colorful azulejos—tell stories of the past as they cover walls and buildings.

Take some time to visit the Belém Tower and Jerónimos Monastery. Both are UNESCO sites, tied to Portugal’s maritime history. You’ll feel the weight of centuries when you stand in front of them, thinking back to the Age of Discoveries

Hungry? Head to a local bakery and grab a pastel de nata. Trust us, it’s the kind of treat you’ll think about long after you’ve left. If you have time, stroll up to Miradouro da Senhora do Monte for one of the best views in the city. The rooftops, the Tagus River, the way the light hits it all—it’s all breathtaking.

Lisbon’s mix of the old and the new makes it a place worth exploring. Wander through neighborhoods, grab a coffee, sit in the sun.

ABOUT PONTA DELGADA

Ponta Delgada, the vibrant capital of São Miguel in the Azores, captivates visitors with its rich cultural heritage and stunning landscapes. The historic center, featuring the impressive Church of São Sebastião and the City Gates, invites exploration of its colonial architecture. Don’t miss the chance to stroll through the António Borges Garden, where lush flora intertwines with serene pathways.

For food lovers, the famous Furnas stew is a must-try experience, along with the freshest fish and seafood dishes. Local markets, such as the Mercado da Graça, provide a true immersion into the flavors of the land, showcasing regional fruits, cheeses, and wines. Ponta Delgada is undoubtedly a destination that beautifully combines history, nature, and culinary delights in perfect harmony.

Vessel

Santa María Manuela

The Santa Maria Manuela was launched on 10 May 1937 in Lisbon. It is a 67-metre sailing ship. The ship was named after the owner’s wife, Maria Manuela, mother of 16 children. The main function of the Santa Maria Manuela was cod fishing. The Santa Maria Manuela underwent a number of structural changes over the years, from the removal of the masts to the installation of a navigation bridge. In 1993 the ship was considered obsolete, was dismantled and only the steel hull remained. The following year the Santa María Manuela Foundation was created, a project that united 17 institutions under the same purpose: to recover the ship. The SMM now has unique conditions for sea voyages, events, parties and training at sea. Predominant colour WHITE.
