Recommendations for Portugalete: Upon arrival in Portugalete, we suggest staying a few days to explore this coastal gem:

  • Bizkaia Hanging Bridge (Puente Vizcaya): A UNESCO World Heritage site, it is the oldest iron transporter bridge in the world. You can cross in its suspended gondola or walk along its upper pedestrian walkway 45 meters high for unique panoramic views of the estuary.

  • Old Town and Basilica of Santa María: A maze of history-filled cobbled streets winding down toward the estuary. At the top stands the Basilica of Santa María, an impressive Gothic-Renaissance church featuring a magnificent carved wooden altarpiece.

  • La Canilla Promenade and Rialia Museum: A pleasant walk along the Bilbao estuary home to Rialia, the Industry Museum. It is the perfect space to understand the region’s mining and industrial past while watching port activity.

  • Salazar Tower (Torre de Salazar): A austere 15th-century medieval tower house built of ashlar stone, formerly belonging to one of the region’s most influential families. It houses a small museum on local history and the Bandreriza Wars, as well as a renowned restaurant.
