Cervantes Saavedra
The history of the brigantine-schooner CERVANTES SAAVEDRA dates back to 1934, when she was built as a lightship at the Swedish shipyard Götaverken AB, under the name SYDOSTBROTTEN 33.
In 1996, the ATLANTIC WANDERER set up its base of operations in Malaga and changed its name to AMORINA. In 2005 the Camilo José Cela University chartered the ship to carry out the first of the Spain and the Sea Crossings, which, under the patronage of the Royal Spanish Academy of the Sea and the Chair of the Sea of the university itself, would take a group of 40 students to Lepanto. The second of the voyages would take place in 2006, as a “Tribute to Christopher Columbus”.
After the success of both projects and with the intention of giving them continuity, in 2007 Mr. Felipe Segovia Olmo became the new owner of the AMORINA, transforming it into a training ship. The ship acquires the Spanish flag and is renamed CERVANTES SAAVEDRA. The updating work lasted for some time and at the end she was chosen for her attractive appearance and unique character, to represent the “ESTRELLA POLAR”, the protagonist of the ANTENA 3 series “EL BARCO”, which achieved a remarkable repercussion and lasted for three seasons between 2011 and 2013 and a total of 40 episodes. At the end of the filming, the CERVANTES SAAVEDRA resumes its activity, mainly focused on academic programs and the promotion of a differential and innovative educational model, based on life experience and training in human values.
